Mellum (or Melvin) Bekkum Waltz This tune recorded by accordionist Bruce Bollerud was transcribed by Jason Businiewski (Lakeside Ramblers). James Leary from the University of Wisconsin said “the name “Mellum-Bekkum” is odd, but that’s what was printed on the Bruce, George, and Friends recordings. . I’m pretty sure the “Mellum” is a mis-hearing or mis-printing of “Melvin.” There were fiddling Bekkums in the Westby (Wisconsin) area, including “Melvin,” and “Melvin Bekkum’s Polka” played by Ed Stendalen appears on the “Across the Fields LP/cassette.”.

Patrick County Blues is neither the blues nor is there a Patrick County. It is, however, a great little schottische that is a version of the Hi-Lo Schottische. This version is as taught by the noted fiddler, Gail Heil.

Honest John is a jig that is mentioned being played in the La Crosse, Wisconsin area in the book “Son of a Middle Border” by Hamlin Garland. The rhythm isn’t really like an Irish or Scottish jig; instead, it is played for a square dance.

Charlie Knuth (the other half of Hoof on the Roof) has an extensive collection of Old Time Fiddle tunes that he enjoys playing on his mandolin, particularly in Old Time Jams around the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Here are some of his favorites for you to enjoy.

Here are a dozen old time Christmas Carols that Charlie and I have transcribed that seem to work well for old time fiddle and guitar. We’ve got a bit of the history with each tune and the original lyrics.
